WOKING'S PICTORIAL PAST ARCHIVE
Here you will find my archive of images of Woking – mainly from the 20th century, with just a few from before (and indeed since).
Many people have memories of this area, but memories can fade and become corrupted (with some features or locations being confused with others) so it was suggested that by including items from my street directories and some contemporary advertisements/invoices, it may help to settle some arguments (and maybe prompt more recollections).
They say a picture tells a thousand words, and the camera never lies (apparently), but also that you should not always believe what you read, so this site cannot definitively settle all disputes over what was where and when.
We all make mistakes, and it is often the case (especially with the directories) that they were ‘out of date’ even before they were printed, and even contemporary adverts and articles can have errors, but hopefully their inclusion here will help. If nothing, they help to add to the conversation.
It has been noted, that most people are too young (or new to the area) to remember what Woking was like from before the Second World War. As a result, I have now split the features into ‘pre-war’ and ‘post-1945’ sections – hopefully making it clearer for those with more recent memories – whilst highlighting the Woking that has been ‘lost’ in the name of progress.
In the ‘pre-war’ sections I have also included a few ‘historical notes’ – in the hope that they may help to illustrate the history of the area – but the idea is to mainly just present the ‘facts’ in the form of the photographs and other ephemera.
I would like to thank everyone who has sent me photographs and illustrations – not just recently, but over the many decades that I have been collecting Woking Ephemera and Memorabilia – and to those who have sent me information on the history of the area.
If you have any illustrations not included here, please let me know – I would be delighted to add them to this collection.
